When it comes to changing a lightbulb we can think of nothing more boring. However when it came time to change over our bulb in the office at least three of us jumped at the chance – why? Because we all wanted to try turning up and down light and music with our smartphones – yes, all with a Smartphone!

John in the office decided he would be DIY man of the day and replaced the old, dull bulb with the new Playbulb. Firstly let’s just discuss the packaging. Encased in a plastic cover, the Playbulb noticeably stands out and looks exactly like a bulb you would buy from any DIY store. Once opened the task of getting the product out of the box commences – John didn’t notice that all you had to do was pop open the sections, after Katy showed him just how simple it was, he snatched it back and said “thanks” – you could tell he really meant it!
Inside there is a small pull out booklet which states how you can easily set up the bulb, so using his phone John followed all the instructions. He quickly downloaded the PLAYBULB App (available on the App Store and Google Play), screwed the bulb into the lamp socket (this works on standard E27 sockets or adapters, so good for the environment too) and within minutes started playing around with the gadget.
Once he’d downloaded the app, John said: a big shiny dial appeared on my mobile and when it is turned you can adjust the brightness of the room, turn the bulb on or off and program your bulb to get brighter or to dim at certain times. However, after showcasing this feature to the whole office…several times – what he really wanted to do was get the music to start playing!
Yes, not only can this bulb light up your room, but the Smart LED speaker will also blast out your favourite tunes, so if you find it hard to get to sleep why not play something soft and soothing from your Playbulb! Setting this up was pretty easy and John found that he could stream anything from his phone, including internet radio and streaming music – it is very impressive, even if we did have to put up with John’s nineteen-canteen playlist!

If you have more than one of these you can set up your smartphone to have different bulbs coming on and off at different times of the day and night – very handy as we get into the darker nights or for finding that those extra munchies after a Xmas night out.
Overall, UnderTheChristmasTree thought this was one of this year’s nifty gadgets. Not only could you replace your old and boring alarm clock, this could be the latest speaker for your music too! It is however a little bigger than your average bulb and will set you back around £59.99 but when you think about how many features it has, we think it’s well worth the money.
