1950’s Fun Facts

Now that the war is over, the decades are starting to look much cheerier! We thought we would put together a list of a few 1950’s fun facts!

  • Did you know that coloured television was first introduced in the 50’s? We have no idea how they coped without colour television! Nowadays we just take it for granted.
  • In 1955, Disneyland opened its gates in California! Now, there are millions of visitors to the park every year.
  • Pogo Sticks & Hula Hoops were the ‘in’ toys of the decade! Nowadays we have ipods and xbox! Not much different there at all is there?
  • The first credit card was released! Oh yes! thank you for allowing us to indulge in our shoe addiction.
  • There was a baby boom in the 50’s thanks to soldiers returning home and the war finally being over
  • In 1956, the first ever pacemaker was invented by Wilson Greatbatch. People probably needed this because of all the babies!
  • The Barbie Doll was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler. Queue little girls across the globe trying to walk in mummy’s shoes.
  • In 1954, the first report claiming smoking causes Cancer was released
  • Christmas was celebrated hugely to make up for lost time during the war.
  • Finally, Princess Elizabeth became the Queen in 1952 at the age of 25!
