A study from Harvard Medical School has revealed that drinking just 2 cups of cocoa a day may boost an elderly person’s memory. This is because compounds in cocoa boost the body’s circulation
Dr Farzaneh Sorond, who conducted the study, said ‘As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow. This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer’s.’
Previous research showed that lovers of dark chocolate (which contained at least 60-70 per cent cocoa) could benefit from a protective effect against high blood pressure and the risk of diabetes. Milk or white chocolate does not appear to provide the same benefits.
Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids which are known to have heart protecting effects
Scientists say it can even benefit those who are already at high risk of heart attacks and strokes.
At last we officially know that chocolate is good for us – time to nip out to the shop I feel the need to look after my health.
