Gif or Jif? Funny Words We All Pronounce In Different Ways

After receiving a Lifetime Achievement Webby Award, GIF Creator, Steve Wilhite dropped a huge word-bomb on us, he tell us though many people pronounce GIF with a hard G it is actually supposed to be with a soft G and is pronounced like “JIF” he said:

“The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Mr. Wilhite said. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”  we were gobsmacked, are you?

This got UnderTheChristmasTree thinking, there are so many words out their which people say and pronounce differently what words have you said differently to other people? and have you ever been corrected?

Here are some fun words in which we thought of:

PRImark or PREmark.  This very fashionable store has had many in the office shouting two different versions, one pronounced primark and other premark – which do you use?

Scone or Scohnne.  Famous baker Paul Hollywood said on his bread show it is pronounced Scone, what do you think? We feel either version is fine by us as long as we get one!

Yoghurt or Yogurt. We were all agreeable on this one in the office it is Yogurt – or is it?

Boohoo or Boho. Another online fashion store which we have heard many pronounce in different ways. Should it be Boohoo or Boho?

Vitamin. In the U.K we pronounce it as it is spelt – VIT-a-min but in the USA the Americans pronounce it VITE-a-min. Who has it correct?

What words make you boil up when pronounced different? and what words make you wonder “why do they pronounce it like that?” Comment and tell us and others your word thoughts using our easy comments box below.
