Known for large staff bonuses and of course it’s brilliant Christmas TV adverts, John Lewis marks its 150th anniversary this May weekend.

Opening it’s first store in 1864 in the busy London Oxford Street, the brand now has a whopping 43 stores up and down the UK.
As part of the huge celebrations over the May weekend holiday, the central London department store will transform its rooftop into a public garden, featuring the cute and cuddly Christmas Bear and Hare – this will be one not to miss.

Tuning into John Lewis’ festive TV advert has became part of most families Christmas tradition and it seems even back in 1864, December was a very important time for the shop too.
In the early 1920’s families could invest around £60 to buy the very latest hotpoint washing machine and even its own range of fitted kitchens to help with Christmas preparation.
However instead of Bear and Hare mugs being their top seller, products such as the first handheld hair dryer, costing £11 in 1925 was one of John Lewis’s Christmas Gift Guides most popular gifts for women.
As wartime came, propaganda gifts hit the market including tea towels with war slogans, a combined handbag and gas mask carrier and bright curtains to banish the blackout.
Once the war had ended many familes wanted to celebrate Christmas with cheer and colour, this meant a rise in floral tablecloths, chair covers and cushions. To mark the 150th celebration, designer Emma Bridgewater has reworked the pattern on a teapot – could this be one of this years top gifts for christmas? We think it may be!
Moving on through the decades, presents shifted more to the individual rather than to the home with long-handled parasols, clothes and just like last year’s top sellers, coffee machine’s have always been one of John Lewis’ biggest hits come the festive season.
