The store that we have known and shopped in for over 50 years is to close over 100 of its UK stores within the next three years.
The mothers-to-be, babies and children’s group plans to cut the number of stores in the UK from 311 to 200 – 36 Mothercare sites and 75 Early Learning Centres
The group which runs the Early Learning Centre has felt the pinch as UK shoppers cut back on spending.
It is their intention to focus on their 200 profitable outlets, many of which are out-of-town /high street stores.
Although the UK side of the business has struggled their international side has increased by 16% and 134 new stores were opened overseas, taking the number of their international stores to over 1000.
Mothercare have appointed a new Chief Executive, Mr. Simon Calver, who is the former boss of the online movie rental company Lovefilm. Mr. Calver will join them next month signalling their intention to boost their online presence.
The store closures leave hundreds of jobs at risk.
