Jingle Bells was written by a minister called James Pierpoint who composed the song in 1857 for children celebrating Thanksgiving at his Boston Sunday School.
The song became so popular, as the words and sleighbell music perfectly captured the arrival of Santa Claus, that it was repeated at Christmas, and has been sung ever since.
