On November 18th, 1928, we were introduced to a little known character who would become the most recognized cartoon characters in history, Mickey Mouse! all we can say in our best Mickey voice is… “Oh Boy! That sure is swell”
As you may already know everyone’s favourite mouse will be 84 on November 18th. Below are ten cool and fun facts about Mickey Mouse you might not know:
1. His name was not Mickey!?
Can you believe that Mickey was not originally named Mickey? Walt Disney sketched him while riding on a train with his wife, Lillian, and told her that he would call him “Mortimer Mouse.” Lillian didn’t like the name, so Walt Disney changed it to Mickey Mouse.. we’re glad he did too!
2. His first ever cartoon
On November 18th, 1928 the release of ‘Steamboat Willie’ was the first ever cartoon with synchronized sound as most studios were sill producing silent films, this was an instant success.
3. Who has a star? Mickey does!
The first ever cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Mickey was given this honor to celebrate his 50th anniversary. You can see the star on 6925 Hollywood Boulevard – “Aw, gee can we get one too?”
4 – He’s in the Encyclopedia
If you thought he just couldn’t get any cooler Mickey was given his own entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica in 1934.
5 – Mickey get’s colouful!
If you can remember the days when only black and white colour was on the television you will know what a big deal it was when on February 23, 1935 Mickey appeared in colour for the first time in ‘The Band Concert’
6 – Hot Dogs!
Mickey Mouse was the first ever cartoon character to talk. In the 1929 episode, The Karnival Kid, Mickey’s first words were “Hot dogs!”.
7 – Mickey Mouse Club
In 1955, Mickey made his debut on television in The Mickey Mouse Club television show. The show began in 1955 and ended in 1996 each episode aired on ABC channel. The show has been revived as the Mickey mouse clubhouse you can visit the website here: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
8 – It’s about being Thankful
The 1935 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City was led by a fifty-five foot high Mickey Mouse. In most of the Thanksgiving/Christmas parade Mickey usually makes an appearance.
9 – Favorite sayings
Mickey’s favourite sayings are “Oh Boy!”, “Gosh!”, “That sure is swell”, “Aw, gee…”, “See ya soon!”
10 – He’s not married not Minnie?
According to Walt Disney, Mickey and Minnie Mouse have never been married on screen. But, in 1933, during an interview with Film Pictorial, Walt said, “In private life, Mickey is married to Minnie… What it really amounts to is that Minnie is, for screen purposes, his leading lady.”
Mickey is still going strong
Mickey mouse even in 2012 is making a huge stamp in the UK toy industry with companies such as Fisher Price who try and make true to character toys which brings the magic, excitement and fun of Mickey to life.
