Toy Sales Set To Soar By 72% This Week

There is only 62 days to go until the big day but that doesn’t stop savvy shoppers getting their shopping for the festive period well underway.

According to supermarket giant, Asda, this week is set to see the biggest uplift in toy sales in 2012 with demand expecting to soar by a massive 72% as parents begin the task of picking the presents Santa will leave under the christmas tree this year.

With the support of Clinical Psychologist Dr Abigeal San, Asda have found that simple, timeless toys which involve an element of role-play were more likely to hold a child’s attention and could last for years, which is saving parents money in the long run.

Classic play things such as dolls houses, building blocks and toy kitchens assist children’s cognitive development and interactive skills as well as keeping them entertained.

Dr San said: ‘Pretend play is important for theory of mind development, it fosters creativity and children’s play becomes more sophisticated, imaginative and abstract as they grow older.’

Andrew Brierley, toy buyer at Asda said: ‘Our role-play toys just keep on giving. Rather than being “just for Christmas” our top 10 role-playing toys will grow and develop in tangent with your child, meaning less boredom and more fun.

‘Our selection of role-play toys continue to go from strength to strength and we wouldn’t be surprised if sales of these overtake the more conventional toys this year.’
