How To Make Hang On A Mug Spice Cookies
These festive spice cookies are shaped to perch neatly on the rim of a mug — perfect for serving with hot chocolate, mulled wine or a cosy Christmas cuppa. Crisp, warming and wonderfully decorative, they make brilliant edible gifts and a fun addition to your Christmas Cookies and Christmas Treats collections.

Ingredients
- 250g plain flour
- 100g soft brown sugar
- 100g unsalted butter, softened
- 1 medium egg
- 2 tbsp golden syrup
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp mixed spice
- ½ tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
Method
1. Make the dough
Beat the butter and sugar until creamy. Add the egg and golden syrup, then mix in the flour, baking powder, spices and salt to form a smooth dough.
2. Chill
Wrap the dough and chill for 30 minutes so it firms up and rolls cleanly.
3. Roll and cut
Roll the dough to around 5mm thick. Use a cookie cutter to create your chosen shapes, then cut a small slot so each cookie can perch on the rim of a mug.
4. Bake
Place on a lined tray and bake at 180°C (160°C fan) for 10–12 minutes until lightly golden.
5. Cool and decorate
Allow to cool completely. Decorate with icing, sprinkles or leave plain for a rustic festive finish.
6. Serve
Hang each cookie on the side of a mug filled with hot chocolate, tea or mulled wine.
Storage
Store in an airtight tin for up to one week. Undecorated cookies freeze well.
