BBC Comedy has officially announced a brand-new Ludwig Christmas special for the upcoming festive season, expanding the success of the International Emmy Award‑winning detective series. With series two currently performing strongly on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and series three already in production, the Christmas episode adds even more momentum to one of the BBC’s biggest comedy‑mystery hits.

Sir David Suchet Takes on a Surprising Role

In a festive twist, Sir David Suchet — known worldwide as Hercule Poirot — appears as a murder suspect in this Christmas special, flipping the dynamic for one of television’s most iconic detective actors.

A Locked‑Room Christmas Mystery in Yorkshire

Set in Yorkshire, the 60‑minute Christmas episode sees John, Lucy and Henry arrive at a remote Christmas‑themed hotel for a much‑needed winter escape. When a sudden blackout plunges the building into darkness, the holiday break transforms into a locked‑room murder mystery.

Cut off by a blizzard and trapped with a killer, the guests must navigate a tense night of festive fear. John is reluctantly drawn into one of his most unusual puzzles yet, racing to solve the crime before Christmas morning.

On working with Sir David Suchet, David Mitchell said: “I have long been a huge admirer of Sir David Suchet’s work and have watched every episode of Poirot several times, so it was a dream come true for me when he agreed to appear in the Ludwig Christmas Special. He was an absolute joy to work and spend time with – funny, interesting and generous – and his performance in the programme is wonderful.”
