How To Make A 60’s Inspired Christmas Paperchain

Make a gorgeous 60s inspired Christmas paperchain with the kids — our easy step-by-step guide brings this wonderfully retro festive craft to life!

The 60’s saw the paperchain become popular as many families made their own Christmas decorations.

UTCT has put together a step-by-step guide to make your own 1960’s inspired Christmas paper chain.  All you need are a few products from Hobbycraft, and you’re ready to go!

What You Need for 60s inspired Christmas Paperchain

• Cream Card
• Red Card
• Glue Gun
• Glue Mini Melts
• Assortment Of Beads
• Paperchain Paper
• 3D Stickers
• Red Glitter Glue
• Green Glitter Glue
• Christmas Stickers

Before you start, we would like to point out that the glue gun does get very hot, and we would recommend an adult be present and use the glue gun if children are helping.

5 Easy Steps To Follow

Step 1 – You have all of your products set out in front of you.

The first thing you need to do is plug the glue gun in to heat up.

Step 2 – Cut the red and cream card paper into thick strips, roughly 3 strips per piece of card.  We recommend using a card instead of paper, as it will not tear as easily.

Step 3 – Take the first piece of card and pick out a handful of beads you would like to put on the first loop.

With the glue gun, place a small amount of glue on the card where you would like your bead to go and place the bead, giving it a few seconds to set before moving on. 

Repeat this, creating your desired effect (we went for a squiggle line), until three-quarters of the paper is covered.

Step 4 – Lift and hold the paperchain and place a small line of glue along the bottom of the paper and loop the card backwards to make a loop and join up with the other end of the paper.  This will give you a loop and your first loop of your paperchain.

Repeat step 3 with different designs.  For our next loop on the chain, we took a piece of red card and a Christmas sticker, which we wrote for each member of the team. We put this in the middle of the card and wrote that person’s name on the card beside the sticker with green glitter glue.

Then, for our next one, we used some 3D Christmas stickers and then looped with the other two.  For the next section of our paper chain, we glued paper onto a piece of card and stuck on some Christmas snowflakes from the Christmas stickers pack.

Then this was looped with the other three, and this was carried on with different designs until we had as many as we wanted to make our own 1960’s inspired Christmas paperchain.
