We asked Dobbies’ Assistant Buyer, Bella Bell, to share some of this year’s biggest Christmas decorating trends. She says: “Customers are becoming much more intentional and thoughtful with their decorating. Rather than sticking to traditional decorating, they are mixing styles, colours and themes to add more personality that creates a look that feels unique to their home.”

Bella’s top 5 trends this Christmas are:

• Warm and ambient lighting – soft fairy lights, candles and layered lighting.

• Touches of nature-inspired styling – faux foliage stems, berry garlands, pinecones and botanical details.

Bella says: “One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing is the return of nostalgia, but with a more refined, contemporary feel. Customers love decorations that remind them of Christmases from years gone by, but styled alongside elegant textures, rich colours and modern lighting to create something fresh.”

If your Christmas decorations are in need of a refresh this year, Bella recommends updating your existing theme rather than starting from scratch. She says: “Adding a few new colours into your existing theme can transform the overall look. For example, introducing burgundy, plum or even a touch of brown into a traditional red-and-gold scheme instantly makes it feel more current and sophisticated.”

Bella also suggests experimenting with lighting to give a tree an updated feel; she adds: “Try adding coloured lights to your tree for a playful retro look or use warm white lighting with burgundy and gold decorations for something more elegant and atmospheric. Small changes like lighting, ribbon or foliage can have a surprisingly big impact.”

Nature-inspired decorating is another easy way to update your home for the festive season. Bella says: “Foliage stems, berry garlands and botanical touches are a really simple way to make your decorations feel fresh and layered. Draping a berry garland along a staircase, styling foliage stems in vases, or adding greenery around a mantelpiece helps bring the outdoors in and creates a beautifully natural festive look.”

Finally, for an instant touch of fun, Bella recommends embracing this year’s statement bow trend. Bella says: “Big, colourful bows instantly create a sense of playfulness when decorating. They can be added to a door, on top of a tree, tied onto dining chairs or used as a focal point on the mantlepiece. It’s an easy trend to try, and it works with almost any Christmas colour scheme.”

Of course, we know Christmas 2026 might still feel a little way off (especially when you’re still deciding whether the garden furniture has had its final outing of the year), but we all know how quickly the festive season sneaks up on us.
