Don’t Put Your Christmas Tree Up Until You’ve Done These 7 Cleaning Jobs

Don't put the Christmas tree up until these cleaning jobs are done - women cleaning

The skirting boards are about to disappear behind seven feet of spruce. Give them some love first.

Don’t put your Christmas tree up just yet. We know. The box is calling from the loft, the fairy lights are practically untangling themselves, and the kids have been asking since Halloween. But hear us out.

Once that tree is in, it isn’t moving until January. Neither is the dust behind it. That corner by the radiator? The skirting board behind the sofa? The plug socket you’re about to load up with fairy lights? They all vanish for six weeks under baubles, presents and a tree skirt.

So think of this as your pre-tree reset. It’s what the professionals do before they style a single branch. Clean the room first, then dress it. Your Christmas photos will look better, the room will smell fresher, and you won’t spend ages hoovering pine needles out of three years of fluff.

Here’s exactly what to tackle, and in what order.

The golden rule: top to bottom, back to front

Professional cleaners never start with the floor. Dust falls, so work from the ceiling down. Then move from the back of the room towards the door, so you never walk over a clean bit.

Clear the tree zone

Cleaning the area before putting your Christmas tree up with storage

Decide where the tree is going, then empty that whole corner. Magazines, toy baskets, the shoe rack that crept in? Move them. Ceilings, windows and curtains

Look up. Cobwebs in the ceiling corners show up beautifully once the tree lights go on. Sweep the coving and light fittings with an extendable duster.

Then the window, because that’s where most trees end up. Vacuum the curtains top to bottom and wipe the blinds. Condensation leaves grimy marks on sills and frames this time of year, so give them a proper scrub.

Surfaces and the backs of radiators

Cleaning the surfaces and sockets before putting the Christmas tree up

The mantelpiece and shelves are about to hold garlands, candles and Nan’s ceramic Santa. Clear them completely, dust, wipe and let them dry before anything festive goes back.

Next, the radiators. Dust collects between the fins, and once the heating’s on full in December, it gets blown around the room. Let the radiator cool, then slide a long brush down between the fins with a towel underneath.

Plug sockets and extension leads

Tree lights, window lights, the light-up reindeer. They all need a socket. Wipe sockets and switches with a barely damp cloth, never a wet one, ideally with the power off.

Then check your extension leads. Look for scorch marks, frayed cables or loose plugs, and replace anything that looks tired. Never plug one extension lead into another.

Skirting boards (yes, all of them)

This is the big one. The skirting behind your tree will be out of reach for six weeks, so do it properly:

  1. Vacuum the top edge with the brush attachment.
  2. Wash with warm water, a drop of washing-up liquid and a well-wrung microfibre cloth.
  3. Lift scuffs gently with a melamine sponge.
  4. Buff dry, then wipe over with a tumble-dryer sheet to help repel dust.

Knees not up to it? A flat mop turned sideways does the job standing up.

Awkward corners and under the furniture

Under the sofa. Behind the armchair. The gap by the bookcase only the cat knows about. Pull everything out and use the crevice tool where the skirting meets the floor.

A cordless stick vac with a bendy wand makes this far easier. It reaches under low furniture without you lying flat on the carpet.

The floor where the tree will stand

That patch of carpet won’t see daylight until January. Give it a deep clean with a spot cleaner now, because spilt tree water on an already grubby carpet is no fun. On hard floors, vacuum, mop and let it dry fully.

Real tree fans: empty your vacuum and wash the filter now, so it’s at full power when the needles start dropping. And pop a waterproof mat under the stand to protect wood and laminate.

Now you can put the tree up!

Room cleared, corners conquered, skirting boards gleaming. One last thing: give the decorations and tree skirt a quick dust as they come out of the loft. Then pop the kettle on, put Mariah on and get decorating.
