Since Martin Freeman let everyone in on the secret of Sherlock Holmes 2015 Christmas special, speculation has been mounting as to what the storyline will be.
We take a look at the rumour that it may be an adaptation of The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle. So why might the Christmas special be based on this story?
Watson visits his friend Homes at Christmas time and finds him contemplating a battered old hat which was brought to him by the commissionaire Peterson after the hat and a Christmas goose had been dropped by a man in a scuffle.
Peterson then takes the goose home to eat but returns with a blue carbuncle his wife had found in the goose’s throat. Holmes then makes some interesting deductions about the owner of the hat and when an advertisement for the owner is answered, it is none other than Henry Baker.
This sends Holmes and Watson on an intriguing mystery about how the jewel, which was stolen from the Countess of Morcar during her stay at a hotel, wound up in a goose’s throat.
So not only does this mystery take place at Christmas time but it also features a goose which is associated with Christmas!
Speaking at a round-table interview last April, Mark Gatiss talked of making mischief about the story, saying, “It was great, we leaked some photographs of Baker Street at Christmas [for A Scandal In Belgravia] and everyone then assumed it was The Blue Carbuncle”.
