At Christmas time we all enjoy the odd glass of wine or two with our Christmas dinner, so we’ve taken a look at our favourite wines for Christmas – here’s our thoughts:
The King’s Legacy 2015 Chardonnay
This Chardonnay has been sourced from two vineyards and the grapes fermented in large French oak casks using wild yeasts. Mandy said of this wine “I really like Chardonnay wine and was more than happy to try this one out. When I first poured it into my wine glass I could instantly smell apples and hints of vanilla which I think came from the oak cask. To taste it was not sweet nor was it bitter, it was clean, crisp and went really well with my pasta. The King’s Legacy wine left a really fresh taste in my mouth and I would definitely recommend this white wine.”
The King’s Legacy 2015 Chardonnay can be bought online for around £14.99 you can find out more information here
Andrew Peace Chardonnay 2016
Boasting notes of lemon and grapefruit and a hint of peach, this wine would be perfect with any Christmas dinner. Elaine from our team said “Andrew Peace Chardonnay 2016 is a really crisp white wine, I could smell citrus and there was also a hint of peach which took away any bitter taste from the citrus flavours.
I tried this with both a salmon dish and with a piece of turkey and have to say I preferred it with the turkey as the two went really nicely together and it was quite refreshing to drink and was crisp and left a nice after taste on my palette.”
Andrew Peace Chardonnay 2016 costs around £9.00 and you can find out more information here
Lambrini is one of those drinks we love to have at our Christmas dinner table as it has a great taste to it and is not as high in alcohol as some other wines. Holly from our team said “I really liked the original Lambrini, although sometimes it was a little sweet if I had any more that one glass, so when I saw that Lambrini had been infused with Blueberry I was really keen to try it out.
To drink it was really smooth and it still had the sweet taste but had a slight sharpness to it which made the perfect balance. I would try this again and would be the perfect drink when having friends and family over for a Christmas party.”
Lambrini Blueberry can be bought online from Tesco for around £3.00 or you can find out more information here
Tesco Finest Vire Clesse Chardonnay
This white wine from Tesco is a Chardonnay from Burgundy and is quite pale in colour. Holly from our team said “When I first tried this white wine I could taste citrus fruits such as lemon and apple which was balanced out with hints of white fruits such as nectarine which gave a good balance between the sour citrus fruit and the sweet white fruits.
I could also taste a hint of mint which gave it a different taste to other Chardonnay’s which I really liked. I had this white wine with tagliatelle in a white sauce with asparagus which I felt went really nicely with the Chardonnay. Overall I would have this again and it went really nicely with the white sauce pasta.
Tesco Finest Vire Clesse Chardonnay is available online from Tesco for £11.00
Tesco Low Alcohol Sauvingnon Blanc
If your looking for a great tasting white wine with very little alcohol then try Tesco’s Low Alcohol Sauvingnon Blanc. John from our team said “Although there is less than 0.5% alcohol you would not be able to tell the difference between one that is higher in alcohol and this one.
The white wine still has a zesty flavour to it such as apple and lemon and goes really great with chicken or fish. I would try this again especially if I am looking for something really low in alcohol.”
Tesco Low Alcohol Sauvingnon Blanc is £2.50 from Tesco
Asda Extra Special Valpolicella Ripasso 2014
This Extra Special red wine from Asda is full bodied, rich in colour and tastes of cherries. Katy from our team said “When I first poured this wine into my glass I could really smell cherries and hints of Cranberry and I thought it really smelled like Christmas in a glass.
The wine was a deep red colour and to taste it was really smooth, had a lot of depth to it and left a really lovely after taste. I also tried this with a vegetarian burger served with fries and I have to say this red wine went perfectly with this dinner!”
Asda Extra Special Valpolicella Ripasso 2014 is available online for around £8.00
Tesco Low Alcohol Cabernet Tempranillo
This fruity blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo low alcohol wine is full of red berry flavours from carefully selected grapes. Holly from our team said “When I first poured this wine I was impressed with how much of a ruby red this was and was keen to try it out. It tasted of blackberry and raspberry but it was full bodied and was really smooth to drink.
This was also a lower alcohol wine as it only has 0.5% alcohol but I could not taste much difference between that and a higher alcohol wine. Overall I would have Tesco’s Low Alcohol Cabernet Tempranillo with some cheese and biscuits or if you were a meat eater perhaps with some beef or pork.”
Tesco Low Alcohol Cabernet Tempranillo is available online for £3.00
Apothic Dark 75cl Wine
Apothic Dark is a dark red wine which is full of flavour and comes in a beautiful black matte bottle. Holly said “When I first saw Apothic Dark I was impressed with the bottle as it was completely black and had a matte finish to the bottle. When I poured a glass of this wine into my glass it was a really rich, full bodied wine and I couldn’t wait to try it.
I tried the wine and I could instantly taste chocolate and blueberry, each of which balanced out the flavour so it didn’t make it bitter or sweet, everything was just perfectly balanced. Apothic Dark left a smooth and velvety after taste and it was went really well with blue Stilton cheese and biscuits, I will definitely be stocking up on this red wine for over the festive period.”
Apothic Dark can be bought online from Ocado for around £8.00 or you can find out more information here
Baron de Ley Rioja Reserva
Ruby red in colour and full of fruity characters Baron De Ley Rioja Reserva is one of those wines you won’t want to share. Katy from our team said “I am a really big fan of red wine and I have to say this has been one of my favourite wines so far.
The wine itself is a ruby red in colour and has a fruity taste to it such as cherry. It is then balanced out with hints of toffee and wild herbs which gave the wine real depth of flavour. The red wine has a creamy velvet texture and left a nice after taste in the palette. I would highly recommend this Reserva Rioja although I’m not too sure I would share it with anyone else!”
Trivento Argentina 2016 Malbec Reserve
Platinum award winner Trivento Argentina 2016 Malbec Reserve is full of fruity flavours such as plum and raspberry. Mandy from our team said “I was looking forward to trying this wine as it had won such a great award and had to say I can see why. The wine itself is full-bodied and was really smooth to drink. I could taste the plum and raspberry flavours but it also had a hint of sweetness to it which made sure this wine was not bitter.
None of the flavours are over-powering and I found it tasted at it’s best when I decanted into a glass for a while and let the flavours all work together. I tried this with smokey cheese and cheddar cheese and it went perfectly, I would definitely recommend this wine.”
Trivento Argentina 2016 Malbec Reserve is available from Tesco for £11.00 or you can find out more information here
Tesco Finest Valpolicella Ripasso
Tesco Finest Valpolicella Ripasso is from Northern Italy’s Valpolicella region and is full of dark fruit flavours. John from our team said “This red wine states that it has been passed twice through the grape skin to create a darker colour and I have to say it really is a deep ruby red colour.
To taste this wine had cherry flavour which worked really well with the spices which I think I could taste hints of black pepper. The wine itself had a rich texture and had a smooth taste I would recommend this red wine with a wintery casserole.”
Tesco Finest Valpolicella Ripasso costs around £11.00 and can be bought online from Tesco
Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine
Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine is the festive edition based on it’s Ginger Beer. Elaine from our team gave this a try, here is what Elaine said “I already like the Crabbie’s Ginger Beer so I was really keen to try the Mulled Wine and see what it was like. When I opened the bottle I could instantly smell Christmas as it had the familiar mulled wine flavours such as cinnamon, cloves and all of that was mixed together with a bit of ginger which Crabbie’s is famous for.
I heated this up a little and I have to say that all of the flavours worked really well together and neither over-powered the other. Overall I thought Crabbie’s Mulled Wine was the perfect drink to have on a cold winters night and even better to have after you have done the big Christmas shop!”
