BBC Radio 3’s Breakfast Christmas Carol Competition returns for 2021! and here are all the details on how you can enter.
Do you think you could write the tune for Christina Rosetti’s seasonal Love Came Down At Christmas? if so, BBC is calling on all music lovers and amateur composers to enter its annual Breakfast Christmas Carol Competition.
Last year saw James Walton from Preston win the competition as he set words to Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem Christmas Carol, this year, entrants are being asked to write a tune for Christina Rosetti’s seasonal Love Came Down At Christmas.
A star-studded judging panel (including Church of England parish priest, musician, journalist, and radio presenter Reverend Richard Coles) will be in charge of shortlisting the initial entries and the final six will have the chance to work with the composer and choral director Ken Burton to turn the initial tunes into fully-arranged carols.
These six arranged carols will then be performed live by the BBC Singers on BBC Radio 3 Breakfast on Wednesday 15 December – opening the public vote. They will be presented across BBC Radio 3 programmes until Tuesday 21 December – when voting closes. The winning carol will be announced in Radio 3’s Breakfast show on Wednesday 22 December.
UPDATE: Tamiko Dooley from Surbiton was crowned winner of the 2021 BBC Radio 3 Breakfast Carol Competition on air by Breakfast presenter, Petroc Trelawny in another record breaking year of entries. Attracting nearly 1000 entries this year, the winning composition was voted for by the public and performed live by the BBC Singers, directed by Owain Park, on BBC Radio 3 and will feature on Christmas Day on the station and on BBC Sounds.
