If you always seem to spend a fortune on Christmas and don’t want to break the bank again this year, check out these top tips and tricks for shopping on a budget. We spoke to money expert Kate Pattinson from Ashleighmoneysaver.co.uk who shared her expert tips.
Shop All Year Round
A major way of saving money this festive season is to shop all year round rather than all at once in a frantic festive rush. Instead of seeing something a loved one would like when you’re out shopping, then forgetting about it later in the year, buy it there and then! The odd £20 once or twice a month is going to sting a lot less, not to mention the fact that prices are hiked the closer you get to December.
Don’t forget to shop multi-buys too! There’s a reason that Boots 3 for 2 is so popular every year, and it’s because you can get multiple family members’ gifts sorted for less while still giving them a great quality product they’ll adore.
Reward Me Now
One of the quickest and simplest ways to save money, even in December, is by becoming a member of Reward Me Now. The instant discount app gives you instant, exclusive discounts on everything from gadgets to fashion. Simply buy an eGift Code through the app and enjoy savings instantly! You’ll be able to grab those trending toys for the kids for less, and can even save on top of sale items too, so it’ll certainly make your money go further!
Upcycle And Hit The Charity Shops
You don’t have to spend a fortune on a trendy item to impress your loved ones. Why not scour your local charity shops, or even have a hunt on seller sites like eBay for quirkier options? You can snap up everything from vintage trinkets to kitsch merchandise they loved when they were young for bargain prices. If you get some cute homeware, you could even think about upcycling it with a lick of paint to suit their style perfectly! They do say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and they’re sure to feel special when they see how much thought and effort has gone into their gift.
Shop The Sales
If you want to be uber organised and fancy avoiding the big rush, why not shop the sales? Arguably some of the best bargains to be had are on Boxing Day where you can enjoy massive savings on items. If your kids are grown up, or you don’t mind not opening gifts on the day itself, you could even think about waiting until Boxing Day and go on a family shopping trip. This way each family member can get exactly what they want and more without spending over your budget on last minute price hikes.
If you’re a little concerned that your loved one’s taste will change by December, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers! On these days you’re sure to find the best tech deals, along with beauty offers and top toys too. If you can’t bear the big rush on those days, be sure to look online instead. Many retailers now hold sales for the whole week to avoid too much chaos on those particular events. Keep in mind that many people will be ordering items so there may be a bit of a wait for delivery, so think of heading into store if you need something urgently.
Compare Prices & Write Lists
Don’t just settle for the first deal you find when shopping for more expensive items. Spend an evening scouring different retailers to find the lowest prices. When you’ve found your best deals, write yourself a list of the gifts and their retailers for when you go shopping. Stick rigidly to that list and only visit those stores, that way you won’t get distracted by other offers that may be on, and end up spending extra money.
